Welcome to Our Mission
Growing Food and Farmers
Maui Trout Company is the successor to Kulahaven Farms and represents over 10 years of research and development as Hawaii’s first rainbow trout aquaponics farm. It is our mission to provide high-tech agricultural jobs to keep our children in Hawai‘i while also stimulating our economy, training new farmers and enhancing Hawaii’s food security. We believe that food is the business of the future because without food we have no future.

Research, Design & Development
Kulahaven completed its Research and Development December of 2022.
Present: Planning
Looking for a Home
We are currently working to build our full-scale version as soon as possible at a new site where we will be able to incorporate tours and trout fishing
Future: The Vision
Grow farmers and Farmers
Our new farm will be a model to create numerous small partner farms, spawning a new industry for Hawaii and producing millions of pounds of nutrient-dense food.

We are ramping up plans to open our new farm and would welcome your comments.
To begin with
Our Results
Although our commercial R&D test site was only a 1/3rd acre facility, we were able to produce at least a portion of over 200,000 meals in both 2021 and 2022. Because it was experimental, we only grew 2 crops: rainbow trout and organically-certified baby watercress. The demand for both far exceeded our supply and we look forward to an expanded operation that will be able to better provide nutritious food for our community.

Present Plans
We are currently working to build a full-scale operation that is based upon the research done at Kulahaven. This will be at least 6 times larger and, with the system improvements we will be implementing, capable of producing more than 800,000 pounds of sweet trout and organic vegetable crops annually. A big part of our new farm will be tours: both guided tours and farm to table tours. And we will have a trout fishing venue for the keiki.
The New Farm
Our new farm is just the start of an entire industry for Hawaii.
Tenuous Supply Chain
We all know how isolated Hawaii is, and how much food we import every year, leaving us all at risk in the event of any disruption in our tenuous supply chain.
Cooperation
We envision a cooperative structure that provides training, design services, technical support, fingerling fish and feed as well as sales, marketing, processing and distribution of both fresh and value-added products.
Local Food Deficit
We will be training new farmers and helping to create new partner farms that can operate cooperatively to make a significant dent in our local food deficit.
Solution
We are working hard to mitigate that risk while also providing quality jobs, stimulating our economy, training new farmers, and helping create new farms that will be able provide lots of nutritious delicious food for our families and yours for generations to come.

Ready for the Next Round
Many people talk about these things. Some of us are actively working on
them, especially farmers because we are the hardest working people you’ll
ever meet. We’re not asking for a hand out. Just a hand up.
